East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Been looking - desperately - for a suitable place to which to relocate and hopefully live and work in peace.
Short version: jobs aplenty with competitive pay in Kentucky and Tennessee BUT higher population density, major cities much closer, amd closer to DC. Out west in CO, WY, ID, and MT pop. density is lower, big cities fewer and further away, and DC is far away BUT jobs in my field don't pay much and are in short supply. What's a better choice? East or west of the Mississippi? |
Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
I live out west, it would be much easier to grow food in Kentucky or Tennessee

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
what do you do?

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Yes, what do you do? Out here in Vegas everything is growing real fast. The cost of living has been going up though...

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Wyoming is experiencing a negative population growth. More people leaving than coming in.
If you find that right 'valley' to live in, say one that has a 'river run through it' (couldn't resist), you could be in great shape. No state income tax and I think no state tax as well. Plus, in some places, land can be had for cheap. But if it's really cheap, that means no water, so be careful of what you purchase land wise. Hope that helps. j |

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
I prefer the West but if the job market in your field is better in Kentucky and Tennesee I'd go there. Not bad as far as the East is concerned. Or you could stay in sunny California and assimilate with the mexicans.

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
I like it here for the low density population, where I am at, and also the woods is my backyard and in an emergency that's the way I'd rather fight.

Good amount of rain fall where I come from.

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
How about Michigan, Minnesota or Wisconsin. Although plenty cold. Lots of water. I read a very interesting article that implied these will be good areas to be, the upper midwest. Believe it or not the authors concern with the Washington and Oregon coastal areas was piracy.

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
I chose East.
KY and TN have suited me just fine as a move from my original Michigan. On the upper midwest... The place is dying from the Industry Cutbacks, downsizes, bankruptcies etc. I have a few friends still in MI that are planning an escape soon. The place is falling apart. |
Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Just stay clear of Texas.. I've planted myself right in the middle of Aztlan. The big buckle boys are too busy with college football to figure that out.:Zzzz:

STFU. Quit talking about Wyoming. It's cold and really windy here. There are no stores here except Walmart. There is a beautiful woman behind every tree in Wyoming. The problem is finding a tree. It is very desolate and there is nothing to do. However Colorado, on the other hand, has lots of new overpriced houses waiting for you. Big cities with shopping and Cheyenne Mountain to protect you. Lots of jobs that pay minimum wage, as well as the 2nd largest gold depository in the U.S. under the Mint in Denver. It's not far from the Federal Reserve Bank on 16th St. in Denver. Colorado is very pretty and has lots of trees. Yep. Definitely Colorado. Prag |

Further, the cost of living is probably less. So you probably are financially better off in more than one way. Tennessee has no state income tax, or didn't a few years ago. I am not one that believes that money brings happiness and answers everything, but it sure makes it easier - plus more FRN's means more PMs. The parts of Kentucky and Tennessee that I have seen,I generally liked. And I've been through/near most parts. PLus, I bet you'll find it's a whole different world than California _grin_ Caveat - I'm prejudiced. I am a southerner, born, raised, lived my 60 years of life in the South. These places seem like home to me _big grin_ |

There are many, many reasons NOT to be in MII cant go into them all N. Minnesota is good and NW. WI thats where we are heading soon. We've already built a home in MI...semi self sufficient. It took us 4 years to buildwere almost done. But, I believe now it was only our practice home. Well be moving to WI in about a year and building again on 40 acres. The water is great therelots of area to use geo thermal and wind as our power source. I want to be where the people will stand up with you as well I think youll find that in MN and WIdepending on where in those states you are though. |

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Most of the greatest minds in survival say west of the miss is where to be.
I'd agree... of course I need gainful employment like you... Good luck in your searches, I'm having the same problem as you. If I move my salary gets cut in half. Of course cost of living goes way down too, but not in half. That and my wife is a home maker / works part-part time when I'm at home because neither of us want the kids in a day care. Good luck and listen to God He will steer you in the right direction. |

I came to Colorado in 1976 from Chicago. If I added up all the days gone, I don't think I've been out of this State for more than one month total over the last 30 years, ok maybe 6 weeks - no more. It's a pioneer mindset. You adapt and learn new ways to survive. It's not for everyone. If you can handle that, then you make it. |
Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
That makes two of us Patriot-Act. I haven't been content since i've been in TX. Whenever it is possible, i'm heading for the hills in Nnorthwest Arkansas. The only thing you can grow around here is Fireants.

Re: East of - or west of - the Mississippi River?
Tx is the last beacon of hope. Don't believe so?
Why does TX have more rights in their Constitution than other States? Why does TX have more refineries and oil drilling expeditions? Why does TX have its own power grid? How does TX afford all of this without having a State income tax? Why was TX an Independent country before joining the US and still has the right to fly the State flag the same height as the US flag... no other State is allowed to do that. Why is it that no one can attach your wages in TX except for child support? Why is it that TX is the only State in the Union that is self-sufficient? |

This NASA Photo of lights during nighttime will show you population density. Move to where there are less lights.
